Guest Post – Elder Sharon Grant: The “S” On My Chest

The “S” On My Chest

by Elder Sharon L. Grant

When I was a little girl, one of the television shows that I often loved to watch was Superman. It was fascinating for me to see him go into a phone booth as a regular man, but come out as a totally different man.

He was not only different in the way he looked, but his confidence, courage and vision was also different. As Superman, he came out of the phone booth with more strength to combat the evil of the day and help someone who was in a bad situation.

As Clark Kent, he had no identifiable credentials except if someone knew him. However, after exiting the phone booth, he wore an “S” on his chest which identified him as Superman…the hero of the day!

There are tragedies or circumstances that plague our lives which seemingly take our every breath. It is in these times we want to give up and throw in the towel. Thoughts of, “Why is this happening to me? What am I doing wrong? Is God listening to my prayers?” often come to the forefront of our minds.

We often attempt to pray our way through, praise in the midst of the storm and speak the Word over our situations. However, sometimes even those moments seem to be unfruitful. Phone calls to family, friends and prayer partners go unanswered. Doors close on opportunities to climb the ladder of purpose.

You have seemingly entered a wilderness moment…a moment where you wonder if you will survive. Now, you have entered the phone booth. The phone booth represents a time of preparation. God is preparing you for the next phase of fulfilling the purpose He has ordained for your life. It is not to kill you or your purpose, but it is to catapult you to the next level of life.

In my book, Giving Up is Not an Option: The Purpose for the Pain, I ask the reader to count from 0 – 9. After counting from 0 – 9, the next number is 10, which is only 0 on a higher level. It may appear that you are starting over; but you are starting over on a totally different level of wisdom, strength, understanding and faith.

After God has given you permission to exit the “phone booth,” you then come out with the “S” on your chest…you’re a “Survivor!” You made it! God promised in Hebrews 13:5b, “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” You now know in your heart that God is your Source. Nothing is impossible for God and you are a Survivor! When it appears that life is chaotic, remember you have an “S” on your chest.
Thought: Jesus took the “S” (Scars) on His back, so you can have an “S”  (Survivor) on your chest.
